Why I Know Some Readers Hate Me…Even Though I’m Trying to Help

Over the last 3 months, I have been hated more than you think. I know there are plenty of good reasons to hate me. However, I wish me trying to help my incredible readers wasn’t one of them.

How It All Started

Back in October of 2009, I earned my first buck online. Actually I received five of them. I was so happy. I sent a text to my girlfriend letting her know that I sold my first affiliate eBook entitled Simple Guide to a Minimalist Life by Leo Babauta, one of my many idols. Someone actually listened to a suggestion I had and I was paid for it. How cool was that?

As I grew as a blogger and my audience became more intrigued by my thoughts and suggestions, I sold a few more of others eBooks. I was so happy that my endless hours of working on The Minimalist Path were paying me back at about the rate of $0.50/hr.

One thing I swore, and still commit to doing daily, is providing information and suggestions that I only support. If someone wanted me to sell a guide on how to become a millionaire tomorrow, I quickly moved on.

With the success that came with selling a few eBooks by others here and there, came the opportunity to grow the audience with site updates, newsletters, and focused attention put towards my own eBooks like Project M-31.

Wanting to Help

As more and more of my fellow bloggers began releasing eBooks and sending me early copies, I realized how awesome their premium information was.

I am not in the business of selling something to sell something. I am a horrible salesman. However, I have some great knowledge as I have tried a million and one things and failed a million times. That one time that I do something right, I try to pass this info on to you, the reader. You already know that with the articles I share here at TMP. So with the launch of my friends’ eBooks, I began to promote their products to you because I wanted to help.

I’m Sorry

I think the first apology email I have ever sent was to a reader who was “tired” of the constant selling of products at TMP. I had recently promoted Minimalist Business by Everett Bogue and soon followed with How to Live Anywhere by Karol Gajda (or maybe the other way around…yet, I digress).

Before sending this email off to the not-so-happy reader, I was frustrated to say the least. I knew these two eBooks would change people’s lives. These were two brilliant minds trying to help others for a nominal fee and I was just trying to pass on this information while in a minor way support the efforts of TMP. Never did I think someone would strongly dislike me for trying to help others.

I sent off the apology email knowing that maybe I stepped over the line. Maybe I did or maybe I didn’t. In the end though, I was just disappointed someone thought of me as a salesman instead of a guiding light.

Haters Gonna Hate

After speaking with Bogue, I realized that there are some people who are not going to like me no matter what. I understand and accept that now. I am at peace with this and hope to overlook the minor speed bumps in my assistance to the world.

So, I’m Here to Help Those Who Want to Be Helped

Today, an online buddy of mine by the name of Corbett Barr has released his guide Affiliate Marketing for Beginners. Now, why in the world would I promote an Affiliate Marketing thing on TMP. Well, looking back, that first eBook of Babauta’s that I sold was a huge moment in my life. It changed my view of opportunity, it helped me build a great eBook in PROJECT M-31 and it helped motivate me to help you in any small way possible. Now, I want you to have this same feeling.

Barr has opened up so many opportunities for himself and now he is doing what he can to help you. I love those who help the little man and this course does just that. He isn’t trying to sell you on making a million dollars tomorrow. Rather, he is looking at giving you a chance to make a bit of supplemental income that will lead to opportunities in other life aspects.

I caution…this is not for someone looking to make a buck tomorrow. This is a course on creating more opportunities via affiliate marketing. I wouldn’t still be writing for TMP if it weren’t for affiliate marketing and I want you to be able to continue your journey down a similar path.

Thank You

And for those that have continued to stick by my side even if I am promoting my friends products, I thank you. I probably do not say it enough, but I truly mean it.

  • I'm puzzled that readers would have strong reactions to your e-book recommendations. It's your blog, and we bloggers are free to post and promote whatever we want.

Most of the excellent blogs I follow have posts or sections that don't interest me, so I skim over those parts. When the overall content is interesting and useful, we oughta be glad we found it.

  • I think one problem might be that your readers like me read a few other similar blogs on simplicity and related topics and all of them promote the same e-books by Tammy Strobel, Everett Bogue, Leo Babauta etc In the end you get fed up with reading interviews and promotional posts the same people

    David,

First of all, I think you missed the point. It's not that your readers are hating you. Suggestions or opinions send by email doesn't mean the sender hates you. (If he emailed you, he cares and is still there.)

What's more, I am not the one who send you email but I have similar feelings regarding promoting paid stuff in this niche WITHOUT value added. If we strive to be minimalists, we shouldn't just mix advertising with HQ content guiding in the simplifing path. Most of us doesnt need another channel for ads.

It's not that the readers hate you but rather a signal that if we post paid stuff it should come with more value added and selling posts should be in the right proportion.

Btw. I am just expressing my opinion. It's not my place and you can set your writing rules as you wish. I would like to note that I neither love nor hate you but I appreciate good content which supports my goals.

    Regards,
  • I felt a little sad reading this. You are discovering one of the harder facts of selling.

I'm not an internet marketer yet, but with my husband, I've run a couple of small businesses in retail and hospitality. And I learned there that, no matter how hard you try, how great your concept is or how many avid fans you have, there will always be those who just don't get you. It's OK. It's fine.

It's always good to quickly ask yourself, "Does this person have a point?" Sometimes they do and you can make an improvement. Usually, though, they're just looking for something else, something different from what you're offering.

A line I read while I was working for a non-profit was "Release with love." It works with the potential donor who turns you down or the potential customer who walks away, whether online or in a bricks and mortar setting.

Release with love. And keep on doing what you're doing David. You rock!

David, I haven't agreed with every single one of your posts (no one is, that's life), but if you believe in something, you should never have to apologize for it. One of my favorite concepts is the "ignore everybody" strategy. If you believe in something, keep with it. We're talking about the minimalist business that helped you achieve a dream. Keep doing it.
  • Nat
I say keep on doing what you're doing! Those people are just jealous of your success.
  • Jeanie
:) I understand your sentiments-but I think that a lot of online folks have a certain brash confidence which is pretty appealing. Why don't you dip your toes into the "I Rock" bucket?
  • Wkh
    Whatever Jesus.
