What Prevents You From Being Happy?

(Article is ~300 words)

How happy are you right now on a scale of 1-10 (10 being kicka**)? I am probably a 7 right now. I strive daily to be a 10, but some of my actions today that are not as enjoyable will lead to my success and happiness tomorrow. So, what are you doing today to be happier?

There are many factors that play into our happiness level. Depression, lifestyle, stress, success, and so on are all reasons why you and I are happy or sad. Obviously, we would all always love to be a 10, so why aren’t we doing more to be happy.

There are a few things we mistake happiness for. For example, I thoroughly enjoy freshly sliced watermelon on a hot summer day. It makes me happy when I eat it. However, it is a short term thing and doesn’t satisfy my long term happiness. Now, finishing a project or completing a marathon are things that truly make me happy.

Earlier, I asked what you were doing to satisfy your long term happiness. Some of you may have had an answer, but I have a feeling most didn’t. If you had nothing to respond to that question, you should now ask yourself, “Why?” Why are you not doing everything you can to start living the life that makes you the happiest you can be? You need to determine what is preventing you from doing this. It may be controllable distractions, unfocused efforts, or a poor environment. Whatever it is, you need to start correcting that immediately.

Happiness should be our one major goal in our short lives. If happiness isn’t currently on your radar, start focusing on what needs to be done for it to become a reality.

I'm at around 6 or 7 myself. Just got a raise at work when it's not even close to the review period. Received it just because I'm doing a great job. That makes me happy! Also seeing that my entrepreneur goals are progressing as hoped also makes me happy. Setting goals that are within reach, and then achieving those goals seems to make me the happiest.

Oh, and RandomOne's comment? That one made me laugh out loud, so this blog is contributing to my happiness. Might want to set that goal a little lower, though. Start with your own neighborhood, and progress towards that Muslim country thing :).

I think we often don't see or acknowledge the small moments of happiness enough. They can be just as important and meaningful as a huge life changing positive moment.

You can't be happy when you're 22 & wanna get laid in a muslim country :) Thats my last step to hapiness ... I know, not very poetic but thats the absolute truth. i'm long time minimalist, living car free, very sociable ... but a virgin .. a goddamn virgin :/
  • I'm probably at 6 or 7, but I'm actively working to get that number higher. Happiness is important to me. I have it MOST days now, but it doesn't take much to drag me down, and that's what I'm working on improving. I need a deeper, more long-term state of happiness underlying the day-to-day stresses.

Today, I'm reducing the size of my bookselling business so I can do less work and get the same or similar income. Leaner is happier for me.

By the way, I like simple, direct posts like this one -- no lists or bullet points. You're saying what you want to say and then getting out.

    Thanks Gip----

I love looking for small happiness everyday. Even if I am in a stressful time, these small points of happiness can dramatically change one's outlook and approach.
