Try Stopping

(Article is ~225 words)

For five seconds close your eyes right now.

Those five seconds may be the only time you take a step back and breathe for the rest of today. Unfortunately, many of forget to actually breath during the day.

Taking a reprieve from the abundance of information and activity during the day does wonders for your productivity and happiness. When we take a step away from all that is going on around us, we are able to refocus our attention on that which is necessary. Knowing what is necessary is up to you.

Try stopping everything that you are doing at least once an hour. I know everyone has at least 30 seconds in every waking hour to just step back from the chaos and accept the bliss of relaxation.

One way to find more time in your day to step away is to implement the 10 minute Task Completion. By focusing on one task and one task only for a specific amount of time (10 minutes should be good), you will be more productivity and allow more free time for relaxing a bit.

For the rest of your day, make it a point to stop for a brief moment and focus on what you want. Worst case scenario, you will have a chance to alleviate stress.

  • Excellent!
  • When my head feels too full of information, I like to stretch out on my bed for a few minutes. If I allow my brain to rest and complete each of the thoughts that are in progress, I can move on to new things. Usually, after 5 or 6 minutes, I spring up with new plans made. If I go to sleep or want to stay longer, I know my brain needs more time to process everything or that my body is physically too tired to go on.

That's the most important lesson I've learned in recent years: My body and brain take longer to shift gears than I would like. But if I take that extra moment, I can rise to so much higher levels than I thought possible.
  • The Pomodoro Technique is a great way of organizing your workday that falls in line with exactly this topic - http://www.pomodorotechnique.c...
  • Very good advice. It is unfortunate that the majority of our society is running at break neck speed, not stopping, never even slowing down. Perhaps if they stopped and looked around they might not like what they saw, and many may wonder how they even got there in the first place. So they run...and run...and run....

I had to teach myself a few years ago how to 'just stop'. It's getting easier as i go along. I also employed learning how to breathe. Now i find myself many times a day 'stopping', taking a look around at my surroundings and really appreciating where i am.
  • This is great advice. I try and take a break every hour and just concentrate on relaxing every muscle and breathing deep.
