Running: The Simplest Weight Loss Program

This week is RUNNING WEEK at TMP to celebrate the launch of RunningSomewhere, my new running site to help you to…GET UP…GET OUT…RUN SOME. Check it out at http://runningsomewhere.com. Sunday’s feature article is a running interview with Leo Babauta of ZenHabits.

I wish I could say eating less and healthier foods are the simplest solution to losing those extra pounds. But it’s not. Sure, I still think that proper health is a balance of 70% focus on diet and 30% focus on fitness, but the diet just isn’t as simple as running.

Running is the simplest weight loss program that doesn’t involve unknown substances and come in a small pill form. It is rarely the weight loss solution of the stars and is probably the last weight loss program anyone wants to sign up for. But come on…it’s simple.

All you have to do is head outside, face a clear path or direction and start heading that way one step at a time. Simple as that.

I know you are probably laughing at me right now. The real funny thing is that it is so simple, people dismiss it as a primary weigh ( !) to lose weight. I would assume that is because people see running as a chore, but I hate assuming because, well, you know what that does. Running doesn’t have to be a chore though. Take your kids to the park and race them from point A to B. Try to set a personal record at the mile every Saturday morning at the local track. Meet some new friends in a running group and possibly a new special someone. If you can make running a social event or goal driven, it will be as simple as it factually is.

Obviously, there is plenty more involved in weight loss and balanced health. But running may just be the thing that gets you to simplify your life and your health.

Most of the people Running towards lose weight and why it is effective because it has to spend a lot of energy when running, and pass that energy is equal to burning calories. The number of calories burned during the execution is usually much more than it burned in less than imposition of forms of exercise such as walking.

    excessive sweating

I tried to take up running back in college. I absolutely hated it, while a friend of mine absolutely loved it. I guess it just goes to show there's no one "right" exercise solution for everybody.

Since bad knees run - no pun intended - in my family (my grandfather had them, my dad has them, and I'm starting to see some signs that I'm affected as well), a lower impact choice is better for me. Mine is biking.
  • I've tried to get into running, and still do it at least a few times a month. The biggest roadblock for me? My exercise-induced asthma. Even if I use an inhaler before I start, I won't get more than five minutes before I'm reduced to walking. I usually can't do much more than short run-walk, short run-walk, etc. Tried a few different tips for the asthma without much success.
  • Well said. This is something that a lot of people don't want to hear because they are looking for the latest fad that will make them lose body fat with little effort. Even though I do not consider myself a runner, I am a huge advocate of incorporating running into any exercise program b/c it is simply the most efficient way of leaning down that I know. And I think many people don't realize that even a little bit of running (e.g., running 1 mile 3 times a week) can go a long way when done consistently and in conjunction with lifting or other exercise.

  • I agree Ben, even a little bit of running can be beneficial. Every runner has to start somewhere and many marathoners (myself included) couldn't even run 1 mile without stopping when they first started out.

Running is changing my life. I played golf. I rode bikes. I played tennis. All more complicated, require more time, and lots of money on equipment.

Running? It is just me and road. Thanks. Look forward to the new blog...

Thank God! Finally, something that has a hope of turning people away from all the puffery on paid programming. Running and eating right is simple and free. Why do people spend money on these pills that don't work and will ultimately destroy their liver when they can go down to the local greenway or track? Another sign of American laziness perhaps. Thanks David, I'll be sure to check it out. I'm always willing to get good advice from a fellow runner, especially one that knows a good shoe (Mizunos).
