About a week ago, I took a lazy day off and decided to head across town and catch a movie I had been highly interested in watching. Unfortunately, as noted, there were only two theatres playing this new release in all of Phoenix despite Phoenix being one of the most populated American cities in regards to people and movie theatres. So, what was this movie about? Obviously, the film was about the fight against consumerism.
The Joneses stars Demi Moore, David Duchovny, Amber Heard, and Ben Hollingsworth. They are all hired to portray the American ideal family also known as The Joneses. They work for an affiliate-type company that tracks the sales of items that they are promoting within that area. Mind you, each person has all of the “ideal” qualities Americans idealize. Saying this family is living the rich and famous lifestyle is selling the portrayed family short. They are living it up on the dime of the sponsors.
Throughout the movie, issues surrounding the behavior, focus, lifestyle and many other characteristics of The Joneses are analyzed. For example, Steve, played by Duchovny, has a difficult time refraining from building a deeper relationship with most of his fake family members. Sure, they are all there for the purpose of promoting a specific lifestyle, but he wants more. I would love to go into more detail as to the issues the family and community have dealing with The Joneses moving into the area, but I won’t spoil the movie.
The Joneses is a top notch movie that discusses consumerism in a way that many companies would hate to be seen. Through this film I believe more people would start to realize the problem with idolizing others and their stuff and start focusing on the important aspects to their own being.
I hope you get the opportunity to check out The Joneses…even if you have to drive across town to see it too.
