Twitter Down = Productivity Soaring

Wednesday night, Twitter went down. Like completely down. The company didn’t know why, but there were quite a few pissed off people I am sure. One extremely happy person was yours truly.

Let me start by saying, I have little self control. I have become an elite athlete with 5% body fat before, but even then I could never keep an ounce of junk food in the house because I would talk myself into eating it. Twitter has become my productivity kryptonite.

Twitter has become a major staple of my day. I communicate constantly through it, but rarely does it lead to my productivity or success increasing. This, by no means, is the technology’s fault, but my own. I am addicted and stopping this addiction is tough for even a minimalist like myself. The major problem is that it is such a great tool for connecting with those I never would have been able to prior to Twitter.

Finding Balance

Through the last few months, I have become better. I have found that if I just check it every hour while on the computer, I know I can restrain for another 59 minutes. This balance will only improve as I break the habit. For me, e-mail has never been such a problem. I know many who are addicted to it and I think I finally can understand their struggle.

Self Control

Simplifying my daily habits and becoming more involved in the things I love rather than just like is something I still work on. Minimalism may be a major part of my life, but I still have flaws (ask my girlfriend).

Twitter Being Down Equals My Productivity Soaring

During this time that Twitter is down, I have been able to get a few small projects and articles done without even worrying about “having” to respond to someone. This is the benefit of breaking the addiction. Hopefully, once Twitter is back up, I will be able to manage the urge to open TweetDeck. It is all a work in progress.

***Update – Twitter was down for about 25 minutes…Let the addiction continue…unfortunately

  • I can understand the time suck. Luckily everything is blocked at my school, so I check my iPhone at lunch and then not again until the evening.

Being home on spring break, I've developed a similar strategy with Twitter - not to check until there are at least 10 new updates.

Social media - can't live with it; can't live without it???

Awesome quote...Never thought of it that way. That's how society has become.

  • Hi David,

Just yesterday I installed the StayFocusd Chrome extension to help me battle my RSS reader/social media/stats checking addiction.

    https://chrome.google.com/exte...

You tell the extension what sites your time leeches are and how much time you "allow" yourself to spend there over the course of the day.

Once the time is up, there's no more access.

There's even a "nuclear" option where you can block web access completely for a user defined timeframe to allow for distraction-free offline work.

After 1 day I can already say that this is a really useful productivity enhancer.

    P.S.: For Firefox there's a similar add-on called Leechblock.
